Starlink, the satellite internet service owned by Elon Musk, has revealed a significant increase in its subscription rates for Nigerian users. The new pricing will take effect immediately for new customers, while existing subscribers will begin paying the higher rates starting January 27, 2025.
In a notification sent to its customers on Friday, Starlink explained that the price adjustment is necessary to support improvements in its network infrastructure and ensure consistent delivery of reliable internet service across Nigeria.
The updated subscription fees are as follows: Standard (Residential) will now cost ₦75,000 per month, Mobile – Regional (Roam Unlimited) is set at ₦167,000, and Mobile – Global (Global Roam) will be priced at ₦717,000 per month.
“These changes reflect our commitment to investing in the infrastructure needed to support and improve your experience with Starlink,” the company stated.
Customers who no longer wish to use the service have been informed that they can cancel their subscriptions without penalties.
Starlink’s pricing strategy has been a contentious issue in Nigeria. In September, the company attempted to increase its standard subscription cost by 97%, from ₦38,000 to ₦75,000.
However, this move faced regulatory scrutiny from the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC), which initially threatened sanctions but later retracted its stance, leaving many users confused.
Despite its promise to provide internet access to underserved areas since its launch in Nigeria in December 2022, Starlink’s high prices have raised concerns about affordability. Critics argue that the latest price hike, amid Nigeria’s ongoing economic struggles, will further limit access to the service for the average citizen.
