Stolen Jewellery: Former Aides of Patience Jonathan Cry Out Over Delayed Trial for Six Years, Harsh Treatment

Several former domestic workers of Nigeria’s ex-First Lady, Patience Jonathan, have remained in custody since 2019 without a clear conclusion to their case. Held at the Okaka Custodial Centre in Bayelsa State, these individuals say they have suffered greatly due to the prolonged legal delays and poor treatment while awaiting trial.

The detainees—15 in number—were arrested in connection with a 2019 burglary incident involving alleged theft of luxury items, including gold bangles, Samsung electronics, and furniture, said to be worth N200 million. In addition to theft-related charges, the group also faces serious accusations like conspiracy to commit murder and armed robbery. Despite these charges, many of the suspects claim they were not even working at the apartment where the theft reportedly occurred.

One of the inmates, speaking from prison, explained that they have not been shown any evidence linking them to the crime. “We were not even working in that apartment,” the inmate said. “She is still waiting for witnesses to come till today.”

Another inmate described threats and harsh treatment allegedly carried out under the influence of the former first lady. “These people want to kill us,” the inmate said. “She would be on the phone listening to our voices and telling them it was not enough.”

Families of the detained workers have continued to plead for justice. Gladys Achese, the sister of one of the accused, described how difficult it is to visit her sister in prison. “It is usually traumatising. The day I went, I was just crying; she was the one consoling me,” she said.

Many relatives believe the powerful status of the former first lady is affecting the case. “Every time they go to court, they say the prosecutor is not around,” said Steve Ibiene, whose brother is also being held.

The case has suffered more than 40 adjournments since it began. According to a lawyer from the human rights group Tech4Justice, efforts to secure bail were unsuccessful. The lawyer, Funmi Adedoyin, noted that the judiciary seemed unwilling to proceed, and the prosecution had not closed its case. In addition, the absence of police prosecutors in recent court sessions has further stalled progress.

Adedoyin also pointed out that, in an effort to keep the workers behind bars, the charges were expanded beyond theft. “Everyone in the villa was arrested. Because stealing is a bailable offence, they charged them with conspiracy to kill Madam Patience Jonathan,” she noted.

Some of the defendants have reportedly suffered serious health issues in prison. One lost a child while in custody, and others were released only after severe health complications. Three of them are currently out on bail for medical reasons.

Relatives and activists are now urging the Attorney General, the National Human Rights Commission, and the Chief Judge of Bayelsa State to intervene and ensure a fair and speedy trial. As the legal battle stretches into its sixth year, hope remains dim for those still locked behind bars, waiting for their day in court.
