The Super Eagles of Nigeria closed their 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifying campaign with a disappointing 2-1 defeat to Rwanda on Monday. The loss, despite Nigeria already securing their AFCON spot, has raised concerns about the team’s readiness for the tournament and interim coach Austin Eguavoen’s suitability to continue leading the squad.
Having confirmed their qualification last Thursday after a 1-1 draw with Benin Republic, Nigeria entered their final match as Group D leaders. Earlier, Libya’s 1-0 win over Rwanda ensured Nigeria’s place at the AFCON, marking their return as one of Africa’s top teams.
However, the match against Rwanda at the Godswill Akpabio International Stadium in Uyo revealed significant shortcomings. While the first half saw limited chances, Kelechi Iheanacho came closest to breaking the deadlock but was denied by Rwanda’s goalkeeper, Fabrice Ntwari.
Nigeria briefly led in the 59th minute when substitute Samuel Chukwueze scored a stunning solo goal. But Rwanda responded decisively, with Jimmy Mutsinzi and Innocent Nshuti netting in quick succession to secure a historic victory.
Nigeria finished the qualifiers with three wins, two draws, and one loss, topping the group with 11 points. However, critics have pointed out several issues within the squad.
Journalist Femi Fabunmi remarked, “The Super Eagles didn’t cover themselves in glory,” adding that the defeat damaged their FIFA rankings and diminished their reputation.
Fabunmi also called for a foreign coach, stating, “Eguavoen has tried his best but we need a sound foreign coach to tinker our lads going forward.” With a year before AFCON 2025, the Nigeria Football Federation faces mounting pressure to address the team’s weaknesses and rethink its leadership strategy.
