Nigeria’s Super Falcons have maintained their position as the top women’s football team in Africa, holding onto 36th place in the latest FIFA rankings released on Thursday. Despite not playing any matches between December and now, the nine-time African champions retained their spot both continentally and globally.
While the Super Falcons’ ranking remained unchanged, other African teams saw some movement in the global standings. South Africa, the current Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) champions, remained second in Africa but dropped four places in the FIFA rankings, now sitting at 54th in the world.
Morocco, another strong team on the continent, holds third place in Africa and ranks 60th worldwide. Meanwhile, Zambia slipped two spots to 64th but remains Africa’s fourth-best team.
The latest FIFA rankings arrive just a few months before the 2024 WAFCON tournament, which is set to take place in Morocco from July 25 to August 26. With the competition drawing closer, the Super Falcons will aim to reclaim the championship title. They previously finished fourth in the 2022 edition and are eager to secure their 10th WAFCON trophy.
Nigeria has a rich history in women’s football, having dominated the African scene for decades. The team’s consistent performance has kept them ahead of their continental rivals, and fans are hopeful they will extend their legacy in the upcoming tournament.
