Suspected Herdsmen Kill 15 in Benue

A deadly attack on the farming community of Mbasombo in the Gwer East Local Government in Benue by herdsmen has left at least 15 people dead.

The attack took place just a short distance from the state capital, Makurdi, and targeted a farming community.

According to eyewitnesses, the assailants stormed the village around midnight, armed with guns and other weapons, and launched a violent assault. The attackers also set several homes on fire, adding to the chaos and destruction.

“It was a terrifying experience. We had just gone to bed when we were awakened by the sounds of gunshots,” recalled a local farmer. “At first, we thought it might be thieves, but the shooting got louder and more intense. We had no choice but to grab our children and run for our lives. Some of us fled without shoes, and I still haven’t been able to find my younger brother.”

The attack sent the village into panic, with many residents fleeing into nearby forests and other settlements in a desperate attempt to escape. By the morning of April 10, local farmers had discovered the bodies of 15 victims. However, the true death toll remains uncertain as many villagers remain unaccounted for, and others have sustained serious injuries.

“This is a massacre, not just an attack,” said Michael, an Igbo trader who lives in the area. “This happened right at the edge of the state capital. If this can happen here, then nowhere in Benue is safe anymore.”

“How could such a deadly attack go on for hours without intervention?” one resident asked. Vigilante groups in the area attempted to defend the village, but their efforts were quickly overwhelmed by the assailants, who appeared to be far better armed and organized.

The attackers eventually retreated before dawn, leaving behind scenes of destruction and fear.
