Not fewer than six people have been confirmed dead following a deadly late-night assault by suspected herdsmen on Adógó, a small settlement in the Mbakundu Kindred area of Tombo, located in Buruku Local Government Area of Benue State.
Residents say the attackers stormed the quiet community around 11:00 pm on Sunday, unleashing violence that lasted several hours. Eyewitnesses report that the gunmen arrived in large numbers, heavily armed and moving under the cover of nightfall.
Local sources also noted that the assailants went from house to house, shooting indiscriminately and using machetes on unarmed civilians.
In a video shared on Facebook by Haakyav Tombu Peter, a well-known figure from the affected area, the horrifying scene was described in painful detail. “They came in hundreds, some with guns, others with machetes. They surrounded the village and started attacking us while we were asleep,” Peter said in the video. He also noted that despite calls for help, no security operatives showed up during the attack.
So far, six bodies have been recovered, including those of children. The victims identified include Ansambe Akpen, Shina Ayom Akpen, Bade Jam Ata, Shiekuma Kpebee, and Sughter Avindigh Taku. The identity of the sixth victim remains unknown. All the recovered corpses were taken to the Community Health Clinic in Adógó for proper documentation and further action.
