TCN: Planned Maintenance to Cause Temporary Blackouts in Parts of Abuja

Residents of Abuja should brace for brief power outages this weekend as the Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) undertakes essential maintenance work at two major substations. This announcement was made in a statement by TCN’s General Manager, Public Affairs, Ndidi Mbah, on Saturday, December 28, 2024.

According to the statement, TCN engineers will carry out planned maintenance on a 60MVA power transformer and its associated switchgear at the Gwagwalada 330/132/33kV Transmission Substation on Saturday.

The maintenance, scheduled between 9 a.m. and 1 p.m., will temporarily halt electricity supply to Gwagwalada and its surrounding areas. TCN stated that during this time, the Abuja Electricity Distribution Company (Abuja DisCo) would be unable to provide power to these areas.

The company further revealed that similar work would take place on Sunday, December 29, 2024, at the Kukwaba 132/33kV Transmission Substation. Maintenance at this substation will last from 9 a.m. to 10 p.m., affecting power supply in several areas, including Wuye, EFCC, Federal Medical Centre, Coca-Cola, Idu Railway Station, Citec, and Life Camp.

TCN expressed regret over the inconvenience, noting that the maintenance is vital to ensuring the efficient functioning of its power equipment.

“TCN apologises for the inconvenience this may cause, especially during the end-of-year and yuletide season. However, it is important that maintenance is carried out as scheduled for the optimal performance of power equipment,” the statement read.

It was also noted that earlier this month, TCN postponed maintenance at the Gwagwalada substation, initially planned for mid-December, due to power supply concerns raised by residents of the Federal Capital Territory.
