Nigerian singer Temilade Openiyi, known as Tems, has won the Best African Music Performance award at the 67th Grammy Awards. She secured the win with her song Love Me JeJe, triumphing over strong contenders in the category.
The nominees included Tomorrow by Yemi Alade, MMS by Asake featuring Wizkid, Sensational by Chris Brown featuring Davido and Lojay, and Higher by Burna Boy. Tems’ victory marks her second Grammy win, further cementing her status as one of Africa’s top music talents.
This category, introduced in 2024, was previously won by South African artist Tyla for her hit song Water. The addition of Best African Music Performance to the Grammys has been seen as a major step in recognizing the global influence of African music.
Tems had a strong presence at this year’s Grammy Awards with three nominations. Alongside her win, she was also in the running for Best Global Music Album with Born in the Wild and Best R&B Song for Burning. This brings her total Grammy nominations to eight, showcasing her growing impact on the international music scene.
Over the years, Tems has gained worldwide recognition for her unique sound and collaborations with global artists. She first gained major attention with her feature on Essence by Wizkid, which became a global hit. Her songwriting skills also earned her a Grammy in 2023 for her contribution to Future’s Wait for U, featuring Drake.
