‘There are Detractors Around’ – A’Ibom Governor Reacts To Trending Video Accusing Him Of Wife’s Death

Akwa Ibom State Governor, Pastor Umo Eno, has broken his silence over a viral video making rounds on social media, which attempts to link him to the unfortunate death of his wife.

The video, said to have been released by a person identified as a relative, triggered widespread online chatter and speculations. However, the governor has strongly denied any wrongdoing and said his family remains closely bonded.

Speaking with journalists at the Ibom Hotel and Golf Resort in Uyo on Saturday, during the 60th birthday celebration of former Deputy Governor, Obong Nsima Ekere, Governor Eno addressed the matter directly.

He described the video as an attempt by political enemies to distract him from his responsibilities to the people of the state.

“We are in political times, so you can expect more of that. My family is intact, and you can see everyone here with me,” the governor stated when asked about the video. He pointed out that the video references an event that occurred shortly after the passing of his wife last year. He questioned the timing of the video’s resurgence, noting that it coincides suspiciously with the second anniversary of his administration.

He further noted, “The event we are talking about happened immediately after my wife passed on, and that was last year. So why is it surfacing and trending now? Why is it on the eve of the second anniversary, when we are celebrating the milestones we have achieved?”

Governor Eno used the opportunity to assure the public that his household is standing strong. “My family is intact. You can see that Jane herself is here; that’s Helen and her husband. So, we have a good family,” he said.

He acknowledged the emotional toll on the family, especially the children, who he said are still coping with the loss of their mother. “The pressure on the children when they lose a loved one can be traumatic, and we must recognise that,” he added.

Governor Eno pleaded with the public to be respectful of his family’s grief and to avoid spreading materials that reopen wounds. “All I can appeal to the public is that it should not bring back sad memories. It is enough that I have lost my wife, and I pray that they allow her peaceful soul to rest in peace.”

Despite the growing noise on social media, the governor maintained that his focus remains firm on delivering the promises of the ARISE Agenda.

“I cannot be distracted. I remain focused, and I will continue to serve the people of Akwa Ibom. I do not wish what happened to me on anyone. So, to those spreading these rumours, if that is what they wish for themselves, I wish them luck.”

Governor Eno also took a moment to congratulate Obong Nsima Ekere on his milestone birthday, praying for long life, strength, and continued service to Akwa Ibom and Nigeria.
