Tinubu Congratulates Edo’s New Governor, Calls for Quick Action on State Development

President Bola Tinubu warmly congratulated Senator Monday Okpebholo on his official swearing-in as the Governor of Edo State, urging him to address Edo’s developmental needs with urgency.

Through a statement issued by his Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Mr. Bayo Onanuga, Tinubu highlighted the need for impactful governance that would elevate the lives of the people in Edo.

Following a successful win in the September 21, 2024, election, Okpebholo took the reins from outgoing Governor Godwin Obaseki, marking a return of Edo State to the All Progressives Congress (APC) after eight years.

Tinubu emphasized that Okpebholo must honor the trust placed in him by voters, commit to effective governance, and strengthen Edo’s democratic institutions, particularly the legislature.

Expressing concerns about past challenges, Tinubu noted that the previous administration’s interference in the legislative branch limited its effectiveness. He encouraged Okpebholo to ensure a strong, independent legislative body to help achieve genuine democratic progress in Edo.

Acknowledging the smooth conduct of the governorship election, Tinubu praised the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) and urged continued improvements in the upcoming Ondo State election. He called the transition in Edo a “covenant of hope,” underscoring the state’s critical role in Nigeria’s economic recovery.

At the inauguration ceremony, Tinubu, represented by Vice President Kashim Shettima, emphasized the importance of democracy and celebrated the day as a significant milestone. “This joyful cheer, this resounding call for a brighter tomorrow, is what democracy sounds like,” he stated.

Tinubu also assured Nigerians that the country’s economy had weathered its toughest period. He encouraged reconciliation among Edo’s political factions, saying, “Every elected leader has a duty that extends to all, including those who may have voted differently or those who ran against them.”

Governor Okpebholo pledged to work diligently, presenting a five-point agenda focused on healthcare, security, economic growth, education, and infrastructure. He promised rapid development, aiming to connect communities to the national grid, empower small businesses, and provide support to market women and youth.
