Tinubu Defends Emergency Rule in Rivers, Says It Will Protect Lives and Economy

President Bola Tinubu has once again defended his decision to impose a state of emergency in Rivers State, stating that the move was necessary to prevent further chaos and safeguard vital infrastructure. He noted that the crisis had reached a dangerous level, putting key oil and gas facilities at risk and threatening the country’s economic stability.

Tinubu explained that the prolonged political crisis in the state had weakened governance for over 15 months, making it difficult to maintain law and order. He said the emergency measure was a crucial step toward restoring stability and ensuring the safety of both residents and national assets.

The President also expressed his appreciation to the National Assembly for approving the emergency rule, praising Senate President Godswill Akpabio, Speaker of the House of Representatives Tajudeen Abbas, and other lawmakers for prioritizing the welfare of the people over political differences. He noted that their careful review of classified security reports showed the urgent need for intervention.

“The crisis in Rivers State was at a perilous tipping point, threatening the security of vital oil and gas installations and undermining the national economy and the significant progress we have made in the reforms initiated since our administration commenced in May 2023,” Tinubu noted.

He stressed that the breakdown of governance, risks to federal assets, and the possibility of widespread violence left no choice but to act immediately. He described the emergency rule as a necessary step to protect lives, secure critical infrastructure, and restore democratic order in the state.

Tinubu expressed confidence that the six-month emergency period would give the newly appointed Sole Administrator enough time to address the crisis, fix systemic failures, and bring together opposing parties for discussions. He reaffirmed his government’s commitment to working closely with the National Assembly to promote peace, economic stability, and fair development across the country.

“Today’s decision exemplifies what our nation can achieve when unity of purpose and patriotism guide the action of leaders. We remain steadfast in pursuing a safer, more prosperous Nigeria — one where every citizen’s potential is safeguarded and nurtured,” he said.
