President Bola Tinubu has expressed deep condolences over the passing of Justice Emmanuel Obioma Ogwuegbu, a distinguished former Justice of Nigeria’s Supreme Court.
Justice Ogwuegbu, who passed away recently, is remembered not only for his profound contributions to the Nigerian judiciary but also for his exceptional mentorship to generations of judges and lawyers across the nation.
Through a statement from his Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, President Tinubu reflected on Justice Ogwuegbu’s life and extensive service.
Born in 1933 in Amainyi, Ihitte-Uboma Local Government Area of Imo State, Ogwuegbu dedicated more than five decades to Nigeria’s legal system.
His illustrious career led him to serve as a Justice of the Supreme Court, where he upheld principles of justice and integrity that have left a lasting impact on the nation.
Justice Ogwuegbu also held the position of President at the Nigerian Institute of Advanced Legal Studies, further extending his influence within Nigeria’s legal community.
Following Nigeria’s shift to democracy in 1999, he chaired the Judicial Commission of Inquiry, an important role investigating human rights abuses from prior military regimes. His work on this commission earned him respect for his commitment to fairness and justice.
President Tinubu highlighted Justice Ogwuegbu’s legacy, noting that his dedication to “discipline, excellence, and integrity” has had an enduring effect on Nigeria’s legal landscape.
His notable rulings, particularly in areas such as federalism, university autonomy, and individual rights, continue to serve as key reference points in Nigerian law, shaping interpretations of the Constitution and influencing legal policy.
In his closing remarks, President Tinubu offered prayers for the comfort of Justice Ogwuegbu’s family and expressed hope that his soul rests in eternal peace, as the nation remembers him with deep respect and gratitude.
