President Bola Tinubu has extended heartfelt condolences to Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi and the people of India following the tragic crash of Air India Flight AI171. The London-bound Boeing 787-8 Dreamliner went down near Ahmedabad on Thursday, claiming the lives of many passengers and crew members.
The aircraft, which took off from Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel International Airport, crashed around 1:00 p.m. local time. It was carrying 242 people, including 169 Indian nationals, 53 Britons, seven Portuguese citizens, one Canadian, two pilots, and 10 crew members. The crash has shocked both India and the global community.
Indian Prime Minister Modi reacted to the tragedy, saying it has “stunned and saddened everyone.” Authorities have since closed the airport until further notice to carry out investigations and emergency response efforts.
In a statement issued by his Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, President Tinubu shared his grief and sent prayers to the victims’ families and the entire nation of India. The statement was titled ‘President Tinubu Condoles With Narendra Modi, Victims Of Air India.’
Tinubu also reached out to the governments of Great Britain, Portugal, and Canada, acknowledging the loss of their citizens in the crash.
“The tragedy of Air India reminds us, once again, of the fragility of life and the common bond of humanity that holds us together. At this moment of sorrow and pain, Nigeria stands in solidarity with our friend, brother and partner, Narendra Modi, and the people of India,” Tinubu said.
He added, “Nigeria also deeply sympathises with the families and friends of other victims on board the aircraft.”
President Tinubu noted the quick actions taken by Indian emergency responders and said he trusts in their ability to manage the difficult situation with both skill and compassion.
