Presidential candidate of the Labour Party in the 2023 election, Peter Obi, has accused President Bola Tinubu’s administration of being the force behind the ongoing leadership problems in the party. Obi made this claim during his appearance on Arise Television’s Morning Show on Monday.
The former governor of Anambra State said that the crisis shaking the Labour Party was not born from within but rather stirred up by those in power at the federal level. He noted that Nigeria was now facing an era where truth is buried under lies and propaganda, making it hard for honest voices to be heard.
Obi said, “This is what you get, always, right? This is what you get always in Nigeria, because we now live in a country of propaganda and lies – and they manufacture it.”
He further argued that the government had a hand in creating and maintaining the unrest within the Labour Party. He stated that the situation went beyond personal disputes and pointed toward a bigger plan to cause confusion and weaken opposition.
“The problem we have in Labour Party is problem instigated and sustained by the government of today,” Obi said.
Speaking about internal party issues, he mentioned an example where a party chairman insulted a state governor. Obi questioned the logic behind such actions and said that blaming individual members like himself was not the real issue. According to him, even if he is called weak, it does not explain the behavior of others in the party.
“Okay, I’m weak, but it’s not weak. Is every other person there weak? So we’re not sincere with ourselves,” he added.
He also touched on how people who speak the truth are quickly labeled or attacked, which he believes is part of a broader strategy to divide and disrupt unity, even at the family level.
“You speak the truth and they call you names. And we now live in a country of propaganda and lies. They are trying to put problems everywhere, they want to even put problems in families.”
