Tinubu’s Tax Reform Will Destroy Nigeria’s Unity – Kano Governor

The Governor of Kano State, Abba Yusuf, has voiced strong opposition to President Bola Tinubu’s proposed tax reform, labeling it as harmful to national unity and counterproductive to addressing Nigeria’s economic challenges.

Speaking through his Deputy, Aminu Gwarzo, during a 2025 celebration event at Filin Mahaha, Kofar Naisa open theatre, Yusuf made his administration’s stance clear.

A statement released by the deputy governor’s Chief Press Secretary, Ibrahim Shu’aibu, highlighted Yusuf’s concerns.

“This tax reform bill is not the solution to our economic challenges. Kano State stands firmly against any policy that negatively affects the welfare of our people,” Gwarzo declared.

The governor criticized the proposal as poorly timed and unfairly targeted, particularly given the current state of hyperinflation and insecurity plaguing Nigeria, especially in the northern region.

“Nigerians in general, and the North in particular, are groaning under hyperinflation and unprecedented insecurity, therefore the Presidency should rather concentrate its time and attention to tackling extreme poverty and hunger, especially in the northern part of the country,” he said.
