Tragic School Building Collapse in Jos Claims 22 Lives, Injures 154

A school building collapsed in Jos, Plateau State, on Friday.

At the time of writing this report, the death toll has increased to 22. The collapse happened at Saint Academy School in the Busa Buji community, located in Jos North LGA.

Initially, the Executive Secretary of the State Emergency Management Agency (SEMA), Sunday Àbdu, confirmed that 17 people had died following a rescue operation.

However, later today, the state Commissioner for Information, Musa Ashoms, provided an update, stating that the number of fatalities had increased to 22, with 154 people suffering various injuries.

In a statement, Ashoms said, “The Plateau State Government expresses its deepest condolences following the tragic building collapse at Saint Academy Jos on July 12, 2024. The collapse resulted in 154 fatalities and injuries. Emergency responders are currently at the scene conducting search and rescue operations.”

As of 6 PM, emergency responders had rescued 154 individuals from the debris. Unfortunately, 22 individuals were confirmed dead.

The injured are receiving treatment in several hospitals across the state, including Plateau State Specialist Hospital, Our Lady of Apostles Hospital, Bingham University Teaching Hospital, and Jos University Teaching Hospital.

A breakdown of the hospital admissions and fatalities is as follows:

  • Plateau State Specialist Hospital: 39 hospitalized, 3 deaths
  • Our Lady of Apostles Hospital: 32 hospitalized, 5 deaths
  • Bingham University Teaching Hospital: 55 hospitalized, 14 deaths
  • Jos University Teaching Hospital: 6 hospitalized, no deaths

Efforts are ongoing to rescue those still trapped in the rubble. The government has directed all major hospitals in Jos to prioritize treating the victims.

“Governor Mutfwang has specifically instructed these hospitals to accommodate all those affected by the collapse,” said Ashoms.

The Plateau State Government has activated emergency response protocols, involving the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA), SEMA, Red Cross, security agencies, and healthcare professionals. They are working together on search, rescue, and resuscitation efforts.

Governor Mutfwang emphasized the importance of adhering to safety standards in building construction. He issued a directive for schools and other facilities with structural concerns to close immediately, referring to Executive Order 003.

The Jos Metropolitan Development Board (JMDB) will conduct inspections to prevent future incidents.

A thorough investigation into the cause of the collapse is underway.

Ashoms stated, “On behalf of the Plateau State Government, our hearts ache for the families who have lost loved ones in this terrible tragedy. We extend our deepest sympathies and offer our unwavering support during this incredibly difficult time. We are committed to ensuring the best possible medical care for the injured and will conduct a comprehensive investigation to determine the cause of the collapse.”
