The Nigerian Army successfully rescued six travellers after foiling a kidnapping attempt along the Wukari-Kente route in Taraba State. The operation, which took place on April 27, 2025, was led by personnel from the 6 Brigade of the Nigerian Army and Sector 3 of Operation Whirl Stroke.
According to a statement from Captain Olubodunde Oni, Acting Assistant Director of Army Public Relations for the 6 Brigade, the military acted after receiving a distress call from the Executive Chairman of Wukari Local Government Area. The alert reported that a group of travellers had come under attack while on the road.
Troops from the Forward Operating Base in Wukari responded quickly and moved to the scene. Upon arrival, they found a white Toyota Hilux vehicle with a flat tyre abandoned at the roadside. The situation initially raised concerns about the whereabouts of the passengers.
“Responding swiftly, the troops launched a prompt rescue operation to the area and rescued the victims unhurt,” the official statement confirmed.
Shortly after securing the area, six individuals appeared from the nearby bushes. They identified themselves as the passengers of the abandoned vehicle. The victims explained that they were travelling from Yola to Lafia when they were suddenly ambushed by suspected kidnappers or armed robbers. In a bid to escape the attack, they ran into the forest, leaving their vehicle behind.
The soldiers ensured that the road was safe, helped the travellers change the flat tyre, and then provided an escort to get them safely back on their way.
Brigadier General Kingsley Uwa, Commander of the 6 Brigade, noted the fast and professional actions of the troops. He restated the commitment of the Nigerian Army to protect lives and property across Taraba and neighbouring areas.
He also urged the people to continue sharing useful and timely information with security forces to help prevent crimes.
“We remain resolute in our mission to ensure peace and security across Taraba State and its environs,” he stated.
