In a bold and swift move, troops of the Nigerian Army’s 223 Light Battalion based in Zuru, Kebbi State, stopped an attempted invasion by more than 400 armed bandits in Ribah, a town located in Danko Wasagu Local Government Area.
The attack, which took place on Wednesday, turned into a lengthy and intense gunfight as soldiers quickly moved in to engage the invaders. According to accounts from residents, the confrontation was intense, with gunshots ringing through the area for hours. The army, using superior tactics and weapons, eventually overpowered the attackers, forcing them to retreat in panic.
Military officials revealed that several of the armed criminals were killed during the fight, while others managed to flee with gunshot wounds, leaving behind weapons and ammunition. The town has since returned to normal, with security fully restored.
AbdulRahman Zagga, the Director of Security at the Kebbi State Cabinet Office, on Thursday, praised the soldiers for their quick action and bravery.
“The troops displayed uncommon bravery. Their swift response and combat efficiency turned what could have been a major disaster into a remarkable victory,” he said.
Zagga also noted the important role played by the Nigerian Air Force, which provided aerial support that caused heavy losses to the retreating bandits and blocked possible escape paths.
“The situation is now fully under control. The people of Ribah can breathe a sigh of relief thanks to the coordinated efforts of our security forces,” he added.
Sources suggest the attackers were linked to a criminal gang responsible for past violence in neighbouring Niger State. Their effort to spread violence into Kebbi was met with strong resistance.
In another clash, troops from Dukku Barracks fought off a group of Lakurawa bandits in Mera, Augie Local Government Area. The attackers, who had come to steal cattle, were met by soldiers and were forced to flee without success.
Governor Nasir Idris, responding to the two successful defence operations, applauded the bravery of the armed forces and reassured citizens that the state government is determined to continue supporting all security efforts.
“These victories are proof that with sustained support and collaboration, our security agencies can defeat banditry and restore peace to our communities,” he said.
