President-elect Donald Trump, in a recent interview with NBC’s Meet the Press, reaffirmed his commitment to ending birthright citizenship, a controversial policy granting automatic citizenship to anyone born in the United States.
This constitutional right, protected under the 14th Amendment, would be stripped from individuals born to undocumented parents if Trump’s plan succeeds.
Explaining his stance, Trump emphasized his belief that undocumented immigrants who entered the country illegally have bypassed the system, unfairly disadvantaging those waiting to immigrate legally.
“It’s a very tough thing to do… they came in illegally,” he stated, while stressing that the move was necessary to uphold fairness. He promised to prioritize deporting undocumented immigrants who have committed crimes, though he didn’t specify which offenses would qualify.
Addressing children brought to the U.S. illegally, Trump hinted at finding a solution through Congress. “I want to work something out,” he said, suggesting a potential compromise for this group.
Shifting focus to global issues, Trump called for immediate peace negotiations to end the war in Ukraine. Urging Russian President Vladimir Putin to act, he stated, “This is his time to act. China can help. The world is waiting!” Trump also hinted at possible reductions in U.S. aid to Ukraine and warned NATO allies to meet their financial commitments or face the prospect of an American withdrawal.
