The Security Adviser to Sokoto State Governor Ahmed Aliyu, Colonel Ahmed Usman (rtd), says notorious bandit leader Bello Turji must show he is truly serious about peace by releasing kidnapped victims and ending attacks in the region.
Usman made this known on Sunday while reacting to a widely shared audio message, in which Turji was said to have expressed willingness to embrace peace and urged other bandit leaders to consider dialogue. While the message may seem hopeful, the government believes action must follow words before trust can be built.
“If Turji is genuinely committed to peace, he must prove it by stopping all forms of violence and releasing innocent civilians being held captive,” Usman said.
The adviser noted that any peace move without clear and visible actions is nothing more than an empty promise. According to him, the Sokoto State Government will only consider any dialogue with Turji or his allies if they take serious steps that show true intent for peace.
“There can be no true dialogue while communities continue to live in fear and captivity. Peace begins with concrete steps that build trust,” he added.
He further explained that ongoing violence and hostage-taking make it impossible to create the trust needed for meaningful discussions. Usman said the first major step must be the safe return of all kidnapped persons, as no community can feel secure while such acts continue.
He also stated that Governor Ahmed Aliyu remains committed to restoring lasting peace and protecting the lives and properties of the people of Sokoto. He said the government is open to supporting any genuine peace initiative, but not one that sacrifices justice or safety.
“This is a chance to end the suffering. Let it begin with the safe return of all abducted individuals,” he said.
