Two Women Arrested for Allegedly Trafficking Newborn Twins in Lagos

The Lagos State Police Command have arrested two women, Ujunwa Una and Chinelo Igbechionwu, for their alleged involvement in the illegal sale of newborn twins.

The police acted based on a tip from a concerned citizen, leading to the capture of the suspects at a popular entry point into Lagos State.

The Lagos State police spokesperson, SP Benjamin Hundeyin, shared details of the arrest through a post on his X handle (@benHundeyin) on Friday.

According to Hundeyin, the two women were apprehended by police officers stationed at Berger bus stop in the Ojodu Division. This followed an alert by a Good Samaritan, who had informed the authorities about the suspicious activities of the women.

The suspects were traveling from Abia State and were found with two baby girls, both about six days old. The incident occurred on September 9, 2024, and upon questioning, the women revealed that they were on their way to deliver the newborns to a nurse in Lagos.

SP Hundeyin further stated, “The suspects were arrested by patrol officers from Ojodu Division stationed at Berger bus stop, an entry point into Lagos State, who had earlier been alerted about the suspects by a good Samaritan.

“The suspects were found with two newborn baby girls, approximately six days old, while travelling from Abia State on Sept. 9.

“Investigations revealed that the suspects were en route to deliver the babies to one nurse in Lagos State whom the mother of the babies promised to link them up with only after they had arrived in Lagos.

“Upon questioning, the suspects confessed to the crime, stating that they were paid the sum of ₦150,000 for transportation of the babies to Lagos.

“The suspects added that the mother of the babies sold the babies because she could not give them proper care,” Hundeyin said.
