UCL: Juventus Edges PSV 2-1 in Play-Off Thriller

Juventus took a crucial step toward the Champions League last 16 with a 2-1 victory over PSV Eindhoven in the first leg of their play-off clash. The match, played at the Allianz Stadium in Turin on February 11, 2025, saw a dramatic late winner from Samuel Mbangula, giving the Italian side an advantage ahead of next week’s second leg.

The 21-year-old winger sealed the victory in the 82nd minute, slotting home on the rebound to restore Juventus’ lead and send the home fans into celebration. His first-ever goal in Europe’s top club competition came at a vital moment, just as PSV appeared to be heading for a hard-fought draw.

Juventus had started the game on the front foot, controlling possession and creating several scoring chances. Their dominance paid off in the 34th minute when Weston McKennie unleashed a powerful strike past PSV goalkeeper Walter Benitez, putting the hosts in front. McKennie’s goal capped off a strong first-half performance for Juventus, though they were unable to extend their lead before the break.

PSV, however, showed resilience and hit back early in the second half. Ivan Perisic, a player well-known to Juventus fans from his time at their rivals Inter Milan, delivered a stunning equalizer in the 56th minute. Cutting inside defender Lloyd Kelly, the 36-year-old fired a low shot past Michele Di Gregorio at the near post, silencing the home crowd and giving his team fresh momentum.

Juventus nearly found themselves in trouble earlier in the game, with PSV creating dangerous opportunities in the opening 20 minutes. Ismael Saibari squandered a close-range chance in the 16th minute, while Ryan Flamingo also threatened moments later. Meanwhile, Benitez kept PSV in the game with crucial saves against Timothy Weah, Nicolas Gonzalez, and Randal Kolo Muani.

Despite PSV’s determined performance, Mbangula’s late goal ensured Juventus will travel to the Philips Stadion with an advantage. The second leg, set for next Wednesday, will determine which team advances to the last 16, where either Inter Milan or Arsenal awaits.
