Atalanta has secured their place in the UEFA Champions League knockout stages following a resounding 5-0 victory against Sturm Graz.
The match, played at the Gewiss Stadium in Bergamo on Tuesday evening, was a night of celebrations for the Italian side, marking several milestones under President Antonio Percassi’s leadership.
The game also saw Atalanta commemorate their 350th win during Percassi’s tenure, with the team now advancing to the Round of 16 with a game to spare.
Fans were treated to a stellar performance as Gian Piero Gasperini’s men delivered one of their most commanding displays this season.
The opening goal came in the 12th minute after a defensive error by Sturm Graz. Lazar Samardžić intercepted the ball near the box and set up Davide Zappacosta, whose cross found Mateo Retegui. Retegui made no mistake, slotting the ball into the net to give Atalanta an early lead.
Throughout the first half, Atalanta dominated possession, with Charles De Ketelaere, Zappacosta, and Retegui testing the visitors’ goalkeeper Kjell Scherpen multiple times. Despite their efforts, the scoreline remained 1-0 at halftime.
The second half saw Atalanta intensify their attack. In the 58th minute, Mario Pašalić doubled the lead by converting Juan Cuadrado’s pinpoint cross. Moments later, De Ketelaere added a third goal, capitalizing on a chaotic scramble during a corner kick in the 63rd minute.
Substitute Ademola Lookman, who came on at halftime, was instrumental in the team’s fluid play. He crowned his performance with a header in the 90th minute, assisted by De Ketelaere.
Marco Brescianini wrapped up the scoring with a stunning long-range strike in stoppage time, sealing a comprehensive 5-0 victory.
This win not only secured Atalanta’s spot in the next round but also pushed them to 14 points in the group, leaving Sturm Graz at the bottom with just three points.
