Athletic Bilbao winger Nico Williams has promised his team will give their “soul” to defeat Manchester United in their Europa League semi-final first leg on Thursday, aiming for a place in the final.
With the return leg scheduled at Old Trafford next week, Williams expressed his team’s strong desire to reach the final, which would be held at their home ground, San Mames, on May 21.
Williams noted that the team has been following the advice of his brother, Inaki Williams, during their Europa League run this season. “From the start, we have been keeping a low profile,” said Nico. “My brother said last year, ‘keep it low-key,’ and that’s what we’ve done. We need to stay focused and give everything for the game.”
Despite the excitement surrounding the tie, Williams acknowledged the challenge posed by United, saying, “United is a great team with great players, such as Bruno Fernandes.” Athletic, who have never won a European trophy, are motivated to achieve a historic win, especially after their Copa del Rey victory last year.
Athletic coach Ernesto Valverde also cautioned his players, emphasizing that the tie would be decided over two legs, warning of the danger of underestimating United’s resilience.
