The Anambra State Police Command has commenced an investigation into the death of an unidentified man who was shot and killed by unknown gunmen along the Onitsha-Owerri Expressway.
Eyewitnesses near the scene disclosed that the victim, who remains unidentified, was followed by assailants traveling in a Toyota Sienna. The attackers reportedly shot him in the stomach and abandoned him on the busy expressway before fleeing.
An eyewitness who spoke anonymously described the incident, stating, “The gunmen abandoned his lifeless body and fled the scene after shooting him.”
It was gathered that the incident occurred in the early hours of January 23, 2025. The police were alerted, and officers from the Ozubulu Divisional Police Station arrived the following day to recover the corpse.
The Public Relations Officer of the Anambra State Police Command, SP Tochukwu Ikenga, confirmed the development in a statement. Ikenga noted that the responding officers carried out a spot observation at the scene and corroborated reports from eyewitnesses indicating that the victim was shot in the stomach.
In his statement, Ikenga said, “The body of a yet-to-be-identified young man was recovered along the Onitsha-Owerri Express Road. The command hereby seeks assistance from members of the public for possible identification of the victim and information that will facilitate the ongoing investigation.”
The body of the deceased has been deposited at a morgue while investigations are underway to uncover the identity of the victim and the motive behind the attack.
The police have urged anyone with useful information about the incident to come forward, assuring the public that updates will be provided as the case progresses.
