University of Ilorin Student Takes Own Life Over Financial Hardship

A 200-level student from the University of Ilorin (UNILORIN) in Kwara State has tragically taken his own life due to financial struggles.

The student, whose name has not yet been made public, was a member of the Faculty of Communication and Information Sciences and had been studying Mass Communication.

Reports indicate that he was a high-achieving student with a cumulative grade point average of 4.5 before his untimely death.

The incident occurred at his private residence in the Oke-Odo area of Tanke, Ilorin. Sources within the university community revealed that the deceased had been facing severe financial difficulties, which may have led to his decision.

It was learned that he lost his father a few years ago, leaving his mother, a retired school teacher, as his sole provider. She had been managing his academic expenses since then.

However, financial troubles worsened when he resumed school last year, making it difficult for him to meet his needs.

Recognizing his struggles, some of his fellow students reportedly contributed money to help him pay his tuition and buy food.

Despite their efforts, the young man was said to have consumed a poisonous substance last weekend while his roommate was away attending lectures. Before taking the drastic step, he left behind a note explaining his inability to cope with the financial burden.

His roommate returned from class to discover what had happened and quickly raised the alarm.

A senior administrative officer from the university, who wished to remain anonymous, confirmed the incident. He described the situation as shocking and stated that the university had been thrown into mourning.
