Vice President Kamala Harris has taken a narrow lead over former President Donald Trump in the latest US presidential race poll. According to a recent Reuters/Ipsos survey, Harris now leads Trump by two percentage points.
This unexpected shift in the polls came shortly after President Joe Biden made a significant announcement. On Sunday, Biden declared he would not be seeking re-election and endorsed Kamala Harris as his preferred successor.
The poll, which was conducted on Monday and Tuesday, showed Harris with 44% support compared to Trump’s 42%. Although the difference is within the poll’s 3-percentage-point margin of error, it marks a notable change from previous surveys. Just before Biden’s announcement, a similar poll had Biden trailing Trump by two percentage points.
Additionally, a poll from July 15-16 had Harris and Trump tied at 44%, and another from July 1-2 had Trump leading by one percentage point.
The timing of the poll is also crucial, as it followed Trump’s formal acceptance of the Republican nomination at the Republican National Convention and Biden’s endorsement of Harris.
Despite Harris’s recent rise in popularity, Trump’s campaign remains unfazed. Pollster Tony Fabrizio remarked that the boost in Harris’s numbers is likely temporary and attributed to the surge in media coverage.
