Iran’s ambassador to the United Nations on Sunday criticized the United States for launching air strikes on Iranian nuclear facilities.
Speaking at an emergency meeting of the UN Security Council held in New York on June 22, 2025, Iran’s Permanent Representative to the UN, Amir Saeid Iravani, strongly condemned the U.S. military actions.
He said, “The United States, a permanent member of this Council… has now once again resorted to illegal force, waged a war against my country, under a fabricated and absurd pretext: preventing Iran from acquiring nuclear weapons.”
The UN session was called following a series of large-scale air strikes carried out by the U.S. on Iranian nuclear sites. These strikes came just days after Israel had already begun bombing targets in Iran earlier in the month.
The situation has raised serious concerns among international leaders, who fear that the region could spiral into a broader and more dangerous conflict.
Iran has since warned the U.S. that it may retaliate by targeting American military bases across the Middle East. While Washington claims that its recent military operation has crippled Tehran’s nuclear capabilities, some U.S. officials have admitted that they are still unsure about the actual level of destruction caused by the attacks.
Images from the emergency meeting showed Ambassador Iravani leaving the chamber shortly after delivering his speech, which was filled with sharp criticism of what he called a breach of international law. Iran also accused the U.S. of violating the UN Charter and said that the attacks could not be justified under any international legal standard.
Meanwhile, several countries at the meeting called for restraint and warned of the dangerous consequences if the conflict continues to escalate. Russia and China backed Iran’s call for an investigation into the legality of the U.S. strikes.
They also urged the Security Council to act quickly to prevent the conflict from spreading further in the already unstable region.
