Real Madrid managed to keep their Spanish league title hopes alive with a dramatic 1-0 win over Athletic Bilbao on Sunday, thanks to a stunning 93rd-minute goal from Fede Valverde. The goal came at the dying moments of the match, following a tense 90 minutes in which Madrid struggled to break down Bilbao’s defense.
After their disappointing Champions League exit at the hands of Arsenal, Madrid needed a morale-boosting win to stay in the La Liga title race, and Valverde delivered when it mattered most. His perfectly executed shot swerved into the top corner of the net, leaving Bilbao’s goalkeeper Unai Simon with no chance.
The victory kept Madrid just four points behind Barcelona, who managed to secure a late win over Celta Vigo the previous day. However, it was far from an easy win for Madrid, as Athletic Bilbao proved tough opponents despite making several changes to their lineup.
Bilbao had reached the Europa League semi-finals by defeating Rangers midweek, and their rotated squad still put up a strong fight against the defending champions.
