The inauguration of Pope Leo XIV will officially take place on Sunday, May 18, 2025, during a public Mass at St. Peter’s Square in Vatican City, according to a formal announcement made by the Holy See.
The event is expected to attract a large crowd of worshippers, clergy, diplomats, and international media, as the Catholic Church begins a new chapter under its newly elected spiritual leader.
In a statement issued on Saturday, the Vatican Press Office confirmed the schedule of events surrounding the inauguration. The Mass will begin at 10:00 a.m. local time, and will mark the beginning of Pope Leo XIV’s papacy in a ceremony rooted in tradition and symbolism.
This will be his first major public appearance since his election, and it will be followed by a number of official and ceremonial engagements. The Vatican also noted that prior to the Mass, Pope Leo XIV will meet with senior cardinals, representatives of the diplomatic community, and accredited journalists.
These interactions are intended to offer a personal and spiritual introduction to his vision as head of the Roman Catholic Church. The Holy Father has requested that those currently holding positions in the Roman Curia and Vatican City State remain in their posts for now.
“The Holy Father’s ‘wish that the Heads and Members of the Institutions of the Roman Curia, as well as the Secretaries and the President of the Pontifical Commission for the Vatican City State, continue, on a provisional basis’ in their respective roles donec aliter provideatur (until otherwise provided),” the statement said.
Pope Leo XIV has also asked for time to quietly reflect, pray, and consult with key advisers before making any final decisions regarding leadership or administration.
“Pope Leo XIV, however, maintains the right to ‘a certain amount of time for reflection, prayer, and dialogue’ before making any ‘definitive appointments or confirmations’,” the statement added.
