Nigeria’s Vice President Kashim Shettima has returned to the capital city of Abuja after attending the 79th session of the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) in New York. Shettima represented President Bola Tinubu at the global event, where world leaders gathered to discuss pressing international issues.
Shettima’s arrival back in Nigeria was confirmed by his spokesperson, Stanley Nkwocha, through an official statement on Sunday. In the statement, Nkwocha explained that the Vice President had successfully completed his duties in New York and returned in time to participate in activities marking Nigeria’s upcoming Independence Day celebrations.
During his time at the UN General Assembly, Vice President Shettima delivered Nigeria’s National Statement at the General Debate, an important platform where countries express their views on global challenges and outline their priorities. In his speech, Shettima highlighted key issues facing Nigeria and the world, including economic development, security, and climate change. He also reiterated Nigeria’s commitment to global peace and sustainable development.
Beyond the main General Assembly session, Shettima was involved in several bilateral meetings with leaders from other countries. These meetings focused on strengthening Nigeria’s diplomatic ties, promoting international cooperation, and exploring new opportunities for development partnerships. The Vice President also took part in various sideline events, which addressed specific global challenges and opportunities for collaboration in areas like health, education, and technology.
“VP Shettima will proceed to join President Bola Tinubu to mark some events put together as part of activities commemorating Nigeria’s 64th Independence Anniversary,” Nkwocha added in the statement. The upcoming Independence Day celebrations will feature key national events and reflect on Nigeria’s progress and challenges since gaining independence in 1960.
