Nigerian artiste Davido has finally hosted legendary highlife musician Bright Chimezie at a private meet-up in Lagos, following through on a promise made months ago.
Their encounter came after Davido sampled Chimezie’s 2010 track, “Because of English,” in “With You,” his collaboration with fellow artist Omah Lay. Fans of both stars had long hoped for a meeting between the old and new generation talents—and the moment finally arrived.
Chimezie arrived in a luxury ride, greeted by Davido with a warm welcome. The event appeared to take place in an upscale restaurant where both men sat together, laughed, and shared stories.
A video posted to Davido’s Instagram captured the joyful exchange, with Chimezie visibly excited, breaking into a dance while the modern version of his classic played in the background.
“I thank Davido for the sample credit of my song,” Chimezie said in the video, clearly moved by the recognition.
Davido responded by expressing admiration for the highlife icon, noting that Chimezie’s work had greatly influenced him. He added that meeting the veteran artist was something he had looked forward to for a long time.
The lyrics Davido delivered in “With You” — “If I speak English, oh-oh, Cho-cho-cho, no working, I no wan punish, woah, woah. I want to punish you, idiarabanko” — closely resemble lines from Chimezie’s original. Many fans saw this not as imitation but as a respectful nod to the genre’s roots, blending traditional highlife with a contemporary twist.
