Viral Video: Tompolo Has Questions to Answer – EFCC

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has responded to widespread public outrage following a viral video showing Chief Government Ekpemupolo, popularly known as Tompolo, allegedly involved in the abuse of the Nigerian currency during a birthday celebration.

The video, which surfaced online over the weekend, shows Tompolo dancing as a man sprays bundles of N1,000 notes during what appears to be his 54th birthday party. The footage has sparked a wave of reactions from Nigerians, many of whom took to social media to call out the EFCC, urging them to take action against the former Niger Delta militant leader the same way it has done with other citizens accused of similar acts.

The clip was shared by a user on X (formerly Twitter), Harrison A, known by the handle @harreceipts. He posted the video with the caption: “EFCC, see Tompolo and the Naira o,” drawing more attention to the incident and fueling public demand for accountability.

On Monday, the EFCC broke its silence through a statement on its official X page. The commission noted that, “Nobody is above the law. Tompolo will have questions to answer!”

This statement comes amid growing concerns that some high-profile individuals might be receiving preferential treatment despite the country’s laws on currency abuse. The EFCC’s reaction appears to be an attempt to assure the public that its actions will remain consistent, regardless of status or background.

The law prohibits the spraying or mishandling of naira notes during public events, as part of efforts to protect the integrity of Nigeria’s currency. The EFCC has previously arrested and prosecuted entertainers and socialites for similar offences.
