One of the individuals linked to the controversial cryptocurrency platform Crypto Bridge Exchange (CBEX), Adefowora Abiodun, has voluntarily reported to the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) in Abuja.
Abiodun, accompanied by his legal team, arrived at the EFCC’s headquarters around 4:00 p.m. on Monday. His surrender marks a significant development in the agency’s ongoing investigation into a multi-billion dollar investment fraud.
Abiodun is one of four people earlier declared wanted by the EFCC for their alleged role in a fraudulent scheme tied to CBEX. The scheme reportedly defrauded thousands of investors of more than $1 billion through promises of high returns on cryptocurrency trading. The EFCC identified the suspects as Adefowora Abiodun Olanipekun, Adefowora Oluwanisola, Emmanuel Uko, and Seyi Oloyede.
Just days before Abiodun’s surrender, a Federal High Court in Abuja gave the EFCC legal backing to detain six suspects, including Abiodun, while investigations are concluded. The order was issued by Justice Emeka Nwite after reviewing an ex parte motion filed by EFCC lawyer Fadila Yusuf.
“I have listened to the submission of learned counsel for the applicant (EFCC). I have also gone through the affidavit evidence and exhibits, along with the written address. I am satisfied that the application is meritorious and hereby grant it as prayed,” said Justice Nwite.
Other names listed in the court document included Avwerosuo Otorudo and Chukwuebuka Ehirim, alongside the earlier mentioned suspects.
Abiodun’s legal representative, Babatunde Busari, Esq., noted that his client made the decision to surrender in order to cooperate fully with authorities and provide his side of the story. According to him, Abiodun hopes to “clear his name and correct the narrative in the media.”
