We’ll Prioritize Passage Of Tax Reform Bills – Speaker, Abbas

The Speaker of Nigeria’s House of Representatives, Abbas Tajudeen, has reaffirmed the commitment of the House to prioritize the passage of the Appropriation Bill and Tax Reform Bills.

According to Abbas, these bills are essential for driving the country’s economic recovery and ensuring fiscal stability.

In a speech delivered by the Deputy Speaker, Ben Kalu, on behalf of Abbas, the lawmakers resumed activities following the Christmas and New Year break. Kalu emphasized the significance of these legislative measures, describing them as critical to Nigeria’s financial future.

He said: “The legislative agenda of the House for 2025 prioritises the passage of the Appropriation Bill and the Tax Reform Bills, both of which are pivotal to economic recovery and fiscal stability.

“These reforms are essential for broadening the tax base, improving compliance and reducing dependency on external borrowing.

“The House will ensure that these reforms are equitable and considerate of the needs of all Nigerians, particularly the most vulnerable.”

The Speaker also urged lawmakers to remain diligent in their legislative duties, particularly when scrutinizing the budget and other proposals. He emphasized that every decision must align with the national interest and deliver real benefits to the public.

As part of efforts to enhance transparency and inclusivity, Abbas highlighted plans for a Citizens’ Town Hall on the budget. This initiative, he noted, would provide a platform for Nigerians to contribute to the decision-making process and ensure accountability in governance.
