Former Senate President Bukola Saraki has responded to President Bola Tinubu’s recent comments about the ongoing struggles within Nigeria’s opposition parties.
Speaking during the Democracy Day event on Thursday, President Tinubu openly criticized the opposition, describing their situation as “in disarray.”
He said, “For me, I will not say, try your best to put your house in order. I will not help you to do so, either.” This statement was seen by many as a direct jab at opposition parties struggling with internal conflicts.
President Tinubu also addressed claims that his administration is pushing Nigeria toward a one-party state due to defections of opposition members to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).
He denied these allegations, insisting that his government supports a multi-party system.
Following Tinubu’s remarks, Saraki spoke with journalists after attending the Democracy Day celebration at the National Assembly.
He acknowledged the challenges faced by his own party, the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), admitting that it is indeed going through a crisis. Despite this, Saraki called on all opposition parties to take responsibility and work toward resolving their internal problems.
Saraki noted, “I think we must take him at his words. I mean, he spoke well, saying that he’s not for a one-party state. So we must take him at his word, and he supports a multi-party. So we are all on the same page.”
He added that efforts are ongoing to unite the opposition, saying, “That’s why we are going around and bringing everybody to come around. So those who say they are under pressure, there is no pressure anymore. So, we’re all for multi party, and everybody should get their house in order, as he said, he’s not going to help us so we are going to sort our own house again.”
