‘We’re Not Enemies’ – Shekarau Dismisses Rift with Kwankwaso, Says Politics Created Differences

Former Kano State governor, Ibrahim Shekarau, has clarified that there is no personal animosity between him and former governor Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso. He stated that their political disagreements were caused by circumstances beyond their control rather than personal conflicts.

In a recent video interview, Shekarau addressed past political tensions, saying, “Honestly, I believe that Kwankwaso and I have no issue sitting together under one roof. In everything that happened, neither he nor I was at fault.”

Recalling their time in different political parties, Shekarau explained how Kwankwaso, while serving as Kano’s governor, joined other governors from Sokoto, Adamawa, Rivers, and other states in defecting from the PDP to the APC. However, he noted that the APC interim leadership, which included Bisi Akande, Muhammadu Buhari, and Bola Tinubu, failed to ensure fairness in the party’s structure.

Shekarau revealed that despite the ANPP making up 80 percent of the APC structure in Kano, the party leadership allocated 60 percent of the leadership to Kwankwaso because he was the sitting governor. He described this as an unfair decision, saying, “It doesn’t work like that. That’s why we refused to be part of such injustice.”

He also pointed out a similar situation within the PDP, noting that Kwankwaso was not responsible for the party’s internal issues, as decisions were made by the leadership. According to him, the same problem resurfaced in the NNPP, where a power-sharing agreement was later ignored.

Despite these political disputes, Shekarau confirmed that he and Kwankwaso still communicate and discuss matters. “Even now, Kwankwaso and I still sit down and discuss issues. We have never said we won’t unite under one umbrella. Everything is in God’s hands,” he stated.

He further noted that leadership is a matter of destiny, saying, “There are many people ahead of us in all aspects of life, but God chose us.”
