We’ve Cleared Umuahia Forests of Criminals – Hunters

The Nigerian Hunters and Forest Security Services (NHFSS) in Abia State have successfully cleared criminal elements from forests in Umuahia, the state capital.

The leader of the group, Sunday Chukwudiegwu Mmeribe, stated that his team worked diligently to rid the forests of drug dealers, kidnappers, and other criminals who had been using the area as a hideout.

Mmeribe explained that his team often acts on tip-offs from local farmers, who provide valuable information about suspicious activities in the forests. He noted that their efforts have played a key role in improving security in Umuahia, making it safer for residents and farmers.

He added that the hunters also work closely with traditional rulers and security agencies, including the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA), to ensure criminals are apprehended and handed over to the authorities.

“Since 2016, the forest guards have been arresting kidnappers, child trafficking syndicates, and other criminal elements, promptly handing the suspects over to the appropriate security agencies within 24 hours,” Mmeribe stated.

One of the major areas affected by crime was the Ikpa forest, which lies between Ubaha and Umuezeoma in the Oriendu Ancient Kingdom of Umuahia North Local Government Area. He noted that in the past, farmers—especially women—were frequently harassed or attacked by criminals in this forest, making it unsafe for villagers to access their farms.

With the recent operations, he said the situation has greatly improved, and farmers now feel safer returning to their fields.

Mmeribe also praised Governor Alex Otti for his commitment to improving security in the state. However, he appealed to the government to provide more resources, including functional vehicles, to support their work. He lamented the challenges they face due to a lack of proper equipment, stressing that with better support, they could do even more to maintain security in the forests and surrounding areas.
