The Lagos Police have given a detailed explanation regarding the arrest and detention of Alabi Quadri, a young man who once drew national attention for boldly standing in front of the convoy of Labour Party presidential candidate, Peter Obi, during the 2023 elections.
On Saturday, the Lagos State Police Command addressed the issue through its official X (formerly Twitter) handle. The Command’s spokesperson, CSP Benjamin Hundeyin, clarified that Quadri’s recent arrest had nothing to do with his past political display.
According to the police, Quadri was taken into custody in connection with a violent incident that took place in the Amukoko area of Lagos on January 22, 2025.
Hundeyin explained that the event was a serious street fight between rival youth groups, which resulted in destruction of properties and left residents frightened.
“On January 22, 2025 to be precise, a serious breach of public peace and extensive damage to public and private properties occurred in Amukoko when groups of youths engaged in violent confrontations that escalated into street fights for all, causing widespread violence, panic, and chaos,” he said.
He further noted that the chaos also led to robberies and assaults on bystanders. The police began a swift investigation into the matter, speaking to residents and victims in the area. Based on eyewitness accounts and other gathered evidence, five individuals were identified and arrested—among them, Alabi Quadri.
“More crucial information was provided by members of the community, some of whom witnessed the incident and recognised several individuals involved,” Hundeyin said. “Victims of the robbery also came forward to give statements and positively identified the perpetrators.”
The suspects were later arraigned in court. The presiding magistrate ordered their remand in a correctional facility while legal proceedings continue. “The suspects were remanded by the court to a correctional facility pending the conclusion of legal proceedings in the matter,” Hundeyin added.
The police reassured the public that the process followed was lawful and based on solid evidence. “All police actions taken in this case have been in the laid-down processes and in accordance with due process, procedures, and based on credible evidence gathered during the investigation,” he noted.
