Why I Accepted Role as ADC Interim Secretary – Aregbesola

Former Osun State Governor, Rauf Aregbesola, has explained why he agreed to serve as the Interim National Secretary of the African Democratic Congress (ADC), pointing to what he describes as a lack of true ideology in most of Nigeria’s political parties.

In a speech made available Tuesday night on the verified Facebook page of a former Kaduna State Governor, Aregbesola noted that many political parties in Nigeria have become hollow groups, formed and dissolved based not on ideas or plans, but on personal gains and the struggle for power.

He noted, “The ADC is not perfect but it stands for something. It was forged in resistance, sharpened by vision, and led by men and women who believe in justice, dignity, equality, inclusivity of all interests and true freedom. It has character. It has soul. It is therefore a true platform for the expression of their aspirations.”

Aregbesola pointed out that most political parties in the country do not have strong values or direction. Instead, they revolve around personal ambition and power-sharing deals. He stated that ADC is different and offers a genuine platform to build a better Nigeria.

The former minister added, “Our political landscape is plagued by parties that lack ideological depth. They are empty shells emerging and splitting, not over policy or principle, but over power and personality. There is little regard for the people, and even less for the country.”

Aregbesola’s political journey began under Bola Tinubu’s administration in Lagos, where he served as Commissioner. He later governed Osun State for eight years and was one of the major forces behind the creation of the All Progressives Congress (APC).

However, he later fell out with Tinubu over political disagreements in Osun ahead of the 2023 general elections.
