Why I Didn’t Implement 2014 CONFAB Report – Jonathan

Former President Goodluck Jonathan has revealed why his administration did not implement the recommendations of the 2014 National Conference.

Speaking in Lagos during a condolence visit to the family of the late Afenifere leader, Chief Ayo Adebanjo, Jonathan noted that the political climate at the time was too unstable for such an important document to be presented.

Jonathan, who was joined by former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, stated that many Nigerians had questioned his decision not to act on the conference’s report.

He explained that during his tenure, the country faced significant political challenges, including opposition from key figures within his own party. According to him, a crucial member of the legislature, once loyal to his administration, had defected to the opposition and actively worked against him.

“It was not the time we could present such a document,” Jonathan said. “Thank God for everything. We believe that one day, one government will review it and take everything.”

The 2014 National Conference was a gathering of respected Nigerians who discussed reforms aimed at improving governance and national unity. Jonathan noted that the recommendations were made by credible individuals without political influence and believed they remain relevant to the country’s development.

The visit to Adebanjo’s family was attended by prominent politicians and members of Afenifere, the Pan-Yoruba socio-cultural group. Among those present were former Sierra Leonean President Ernest Bai Koroma, former PDP Deputy National Chairman Chief Olabode George, and other political figures.

Atiku Abubakar, who arrived later in the afternoon, also paid tribute to the late Adebanjo, describing him as a great leader who dedicated his life to justice and unity in Nigeria. “It is a matter of honour that after his demise, we should come and pay respect for his contributions to the unity and peaceful co-existence of this country,” he said.

Both Jonathan and Atiku praised Adebanjo’s legacy, stating that he was not just an Afenifere leader but a national figure who stood for truth and justice.

Later in the evening, the two former leaders, along with other dignitaries, attended a dinner hosted by former President Olusegun Obasanjo at The Delborough Hotel, Victoria Island, Lagos. Among the guests was former Senate President Bukola Saraki.
