Former Kaduna State Governor, Nasir Ahmad El-Rufai, has resigned from the All Progressives Congress (APC), citing a departure from the party’s original principles and a lack of internal democracy.
El-Rufai, who was one of the founding members of the APC, made his resignation public on Monday, March 10, 2025. He said he had taken time to consult widely before making his decision. As a result, he has now chosen to align himself with the Social Democratic Party (SDP), which he believes better represents his political ideology.
El-Rufai expressed disappointment with how the APC has been managed in recent years. He stated that the party had moved away from its core values and that those in control had shown no willingness to address internal issues.
“Developments in the last two years confirm that there is no desire on the part of those who currently control and run the APC to acknowledge, much less address, the unhealthy situation of the party,” he said.
He also noted that despite his contributions to the party’s success in the 2015, 2019, and 2023 elections, the current leadership had ignored him and other key members who played major roles in building the party.
“The APC has castrated its organs and treated its membership with contempt in the last two years. I find this no longer acceptable,” he added.
El-Rufai stated that after carefully reviewing the situation, he decided to leave the APC and move to the SDP. He described the SDP as a better alternative for those who believe in democracy, good governance, and national progress.
“I have now decided to join the Social Democratic Party (SDP) and adopt it as the platform for our future political engagements and activities,” he declared.
