In a viral video making rounds on social media, a woman identified as Mrs. Favour Igiebor was seen tearing up her husband’s passport. This act has sparked widespread debate and criticism online.
However, Mrs. Igiebor has now spoken out, explaining her side of the story and asking the public not to judge her based solely on the brief clip.
Mrs. Igiebor shared that she had endured a lot in her marriage, and her decision to destroy the passport was a result of her reaching a breaking point. She stated that her years of sacrifice and suffering in the marriage could not simply be ignored, and she had to take a stand for herself.
“The issue has been going on for a very long time, I have just been dancing to the tune till I arrived in my motherland, Nigeria, and I did what I did,” she said, emphasizing that there were deeper issues at play that led to her actions.
Mrs. Igiebor urged those who have seen the video not to jump to conclusions without understanding the full context. She clarified that she is not “a mad woman” who would act without reason. “When it gets to your neck, you have to act,” she said, explaining that her actions were a response to the prolonged hardships she had endured in the marriage.
She also mentioned that she chose to wait until they were in Nigeria to destroy the passport, as she wanted to avoid causing her husband additional stress while they were in Europe. Mrs. Igiebor reiterated that her actions were a way of speaking out against the injustices she felt in her marriage, stating, “Actions speak louder than words, I gave him my action, to know I have been bearing it.”
The Nigeria Immigration Service (NIS) has since launched an investigation into the incident. According to the NIS, Mrs. Igiebor’s actions may have violated Section 10(b) of the Immigration Act 2015, which prohibits the willful destruction of Nigerian travel documents. The act specifies penalties for such offenses.
