Governor Uba Sani of Kaduna State has defended his administration’s controversial decision to engage in a peace agreement with terrorists operating in the region. The governor emphasized that his primary objective is to ensure the safety of residents and restore peace to the state.
In an interview with the BBC Hausa Service, Governor Sani addressed critics of the peace initiative, clarifying that the agreement was the result of six months of confidential negotiations with the terrorists.
He assured the public that no financial incentives were offered to the insurgents in exchange for their cooperation. “I want to assure you that not even one Naira was given to them,” he said, responding to accusations of bribery.
The peace pact was facilitated with the support of influential traditional rulers and religious leaders who played a key role in the mediation process. The governor emphasized that their involvement was crucial in bringing both sides to the table.
He also noted that one of the significant outcomes of the talks was the release of nearly 200 individuals who had been held captive by the terrorists. Governor Sani expressed that this release demonstrated the sincerity of the agreement and indicated progress toward peace.
“They released the people to us. Now, business and farming activities are flourishing in our communities. That’s why I am assuring the communities that we will continue to pray and sustain the relief achieved,” the governor said.
Governor Sani reiterated that his administration’s primary responsibility is to protect the lives of Kaduna’s citizens. Reflecting on his duties, he remarked, “If even one person were to be killed in Kaduna, it’s better for me to have the peace pact. Otherwise, Almighty Allah will hold me accountable because I took an oath.”
While the peace pact has been met with mixed reactions from the public, the governor remains optimistic about its long-term success. He expressed hope that the agreement would continue to yield positive outcomes, pointing to the improvements in local economic activities as evidence of its potential.
