British singer Natalie Okri has alleged that some human hair used in wigs and extensions originates from religious sacrifices to deities and unknown gods.
The former Britain’s Got Talent star claimed that in some parts of Asia, women offer their hair at temples as a form of spiritual cleansing, believing it will rid them of bad luck and poverty.
According to Okri, after the hair is sacrificed, it is collected and sold to major international markets, where it is processed and distributed to vendors worldwide.
She specifically mentioned online retail platforms and hair brands as some of the biggest distributors of these human hair products.
Okri suggested that many Black women unknowingly purchase and wear these hairs, which she believes may carry spiritual implications.
She argued that even though buyers may not personally subscribe to the religious beliefs associated with the hair sacrifices, the spiritual significance could still have an effect on them.
She further stated that, as a Christian, wearing hair that has been sacrificed to deities contradicts her faith. Okri said this realization led her to stop wearing wigs and human hair extensions altogether.
“There are 3 reasons why I stopped wearing wigs and human hairs: some human hairs are sacrifice to demons, deities and other unknown gods. A lot of women in some countries like Asia go to the temple to sacrifice their hair to their god, believing that their gods will purify and cleanse them,” Okri stated.
“They give their hair as a form of getting rid of bad luck, poverty, and other struggles in their lives. We are wearing someone’s bad luck on our heads,” she added.
