Wike Slams Fubara’s Letter to Rivers Assembly, Calls It ‘Useless

The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, has strongly criticized Rivers State Governor, Siminalayi Fubara, over his approach to the ongoing political crisis in the state. Wike, who served as the immediate past governor of Rivers State, described Fubara’s letter to the state House of Assembly regarding the 2025 budget presentation as “useless.”

Wike made this statement during a media chat on Wednesday, where he addressed the latest developments in Rivers politics. His remarks followed the ultimatum issued by Rivers State House of Assembly Speaker, Martin Amaewhule, demanding that Fubara represent the 2025 budget within 48 hours.

The demand from the Assembly came after the Supreme Court ruled that 27 lawmakers, who were previously at odds with the governor, should resume their duties immediately. The judgment was delivered by Justice Emmanuel Akomaye Agim, reinforcing the authority of the lawmakers to continue their legislative functions.

Reacting to the situation, Wike expressed disappointment in Fubara’s handling of the crisis. He noted that the governor was not being genuine in his efforts to restore peace in Rivers State. According to Wike, Fubara should focus on building a strong working relationship with the legislature instead of taking actions that could further escalate tensions.

“Letter to the Rivers House of Assembly is useless; he’s playing to the gallery,” Wike said.

The political tension in Rivers State has been ongoing for several months, with a major rift between the governor and members of the state Assembly. The 27 lawmakers, who are loyal to Wike, had been engaged in a power struggle with Fubara, leading to a series of legal and political battles.

With the Supreme Court’s ruling reinstating the lawmakers, the pressure is now on Fubara to cooperate with the Assembly and avoid further conflicts. However, Wike’s latest remarks suggest that the situation remains highly volatile. Many political observers are watching closely to see how the governor will respond to the ultimatum and whether he will take steps to mend his relationship with the legislature.
