Operatives of the Nigerian police in Isiokolo, a town in Ethiope-East Local Government Area of Delta State, have arrested a young woman after she reportedly beat her one-year-old son to death in Kokori community. The disturbing incident has left many in the area in shock and sorrow.
According to residents, the woman used a cane to flog the baby boy repeatedly in a fit of rage. Sadly, the beating was so intense that the child did not survive. Attempts by neighbours to intervene came too late, as the child had already died before he could be taken to a hospital for help.
Locals in Kokori who spoke about the incident said the woman had been struggling emotionally and mentally, especially since the man responsible for her pregnancy allegedly refused to take responsibility. The man, believed to be involved in internet fraud activities—commonly known in Nigeria as “Yahoo Yahoo”—is said to have abandoned the woman while she was pregnant.
Neighbours noted that since giving birth, the woman often appeared angry and emotionally distant toward the child. Sources claimed that the boy reminded her of the rejection and mistreatment she suffered from the father, and she reportedly viewed the child as a constant reminder of that pain.
On the day of the tragedy, eyewitnesses said the woman lost control and lashed out at the baby without any clear reason. Despite the child’s cries, she continued beating him. By the time neighbours managed to intervene and rush the child to the hospital, he had already died.
