Woman Sells Baby For N4m, Gives Mother N600,000

A 26-year-old woman, Rachael, has confessed to selling her two-week-old baby for N600,000 due to financial hardship. However, it was later discovered that the baby was sold for N4 million to a 42-year-old woman looking to adopt a child.

The shocking incident took place in Asaba, Delta State, where Rachael was paraded alongside two other suspects by the state’s Police Public Relations Officer, Mr. Bright Edafe. She explained that she already had one child and could not afford to care for both, which led to her decision to give up her newborn daughter.

Rachael stated that the father of the baby had denied responsibility, leaving her alone to manage the pregnancy and childbirth. “I gave the baby away because I am the only one taking care of the child,” she said.

She revealed that throughout her pregnancy, she struggled to survive by doing odd jobs, such as cleaning compounds and doing house chores for people. In her search for help, she was introduced to a woman who agreed to assist her financially.

Rachael said, “The woman gave me N600,000 and said I should settle her, and I gave her N30,000.”

Investigations later revealed that the intermediary had actually sold the child for N3.5 million to a buyer who had been assured that the legal adoption documents were being processed. However, the woman who acted as the middleman admitted she only gave Rachael N600,000 from the transaction.

The 42-year-old woman who paid N4 million for the child said she was unaware of the illegal nature of the deal. She believed she was following the proper adoption process and had been promised legal documents.
