Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, in a statement marking this year’s Workers’ Day, stated that Nigerian workers are not mere instruments for driving the economy, but the true force behind the nation’s progress.
Speaking on Thursday, May 1st, 2025, Atiku called on the Federal Government to change its approach toward workers by treating them as equal partners in national development, not just as means to an end.
He praised the resilience and determination shown by the Nigerian workforce despite long-standing challenges like low wages, poor working conditions, and economic instability.
“The Nigerian worker remains the indomitable engine driving our nation towards the long-anticipated promise of prosperity,” Atiku stated. “In the face of persistent hardship and inadequate remuneration, Nigerian workers have continued to shoulder the burdens of our economic ambitions with quiet heroism.”
Atiku also notes that the contributions of workers are often overlooked by those in power. He criticized government leaders and policymakers for failing to match the workers’ dedication with meaningful action or policies that improve their lives.
He pointed out that, year after year, workers continue to face broken promises and lack of progress, even as they keep the country running through their efforts.
“It is deeply disheartening that those entrusted with the responsibilities of governance and policymaking have failed to respond to this unwavering dedication with tangible support and justice,” he said.
Atiku urged the current administration to reflect on the true role of workers and commit to offering them the respect and support they deserve. He said that a just society must value its workers and provide better wages, fair treatment, and access to necessary resources for both their professional and personal lives.
