“You Spoke For Me” – Dele Farotimi Says, Thanks Nigerians for Their Support

Human rights activist Dele Farotimi recently expressed deep gratitude to Nigerians for their overwhelming support during his difficult time in detention.

Farotimi, who is known for his outspoken stance on justice and human rights, was arrested on December 3 at his Lagos office by officers from the Ekiti State Police Command.

The arrest stemmed from allegations of defamation against prominent legal luminary Afe Babalola. The accusations were related to comments in Farotimi’s book, Nigeria and Its Criminal Justice System, which critiques the nation’s legal framework.

Following his arrest, he was transported to Ekiti State, where he faced formal charges.

Farotimi spent over three weeks in custody before finally regaining his freedom on December 24.

His release was made possible after he fulfilled stringent bail conditions, which included a ₦30 million bond, two sureties (one of whom had to be a property owner), the surrender of his international passport, and a commitment not to speak to the media.

In an emotional video shared online, Farotimi said, “You spoke for me,” as tears streamed down his face. He thanked Nigerians for standing by him during what he described as one of the toughest periods of his life.
